Czechs & Balances

I have heard about this renowned bakery since moving here but had never driven by it.  While I've had a lot of kolaches here, I've never really understood all the raving.  (Mainly because they're served cold at lunches and are pretty much always meat based, so I picking at the dough.)  But!  Yesterday, I stopped at the above place and had a fresh warm peach pastry and now understand the appeal.

    1. They're good, but it still is a bit too much plain bread for me~prefer actual pastry dough.

  3. They do look a bit doughy, like rolls with jam... which, okay, great, but why would you line up for that? I wouldn't line up for most things, though. I mean, cronuts? Still pondering the wonder of that.

Hipsters. That's really what it's about: being seen with "the best" and "most amazing" food. To which I always think, "I'll bet I could make one that tastes better at home."

I mean, have you ever tasted lefse better than your grandmother's? No.

    1. Actually, these are the anti-hipster food. Been around since the Polish & Czech settlers moved here in the 1800s.

And yes, the dough is bland & yeah...

  4. I'm a big fan of the prune filled Kolaches at Czech Stop. Totally makes me sound like an old lady - but, seriously, they're good!
