high summer holds the earth

(Okay, so it's not night, but these lyrics were running through my head during my walk.)

Sure on this shining night
Of star made shadows round,
Kindness must watch for me
This side the ground.
The late year lies down the north.
All is healed,
all is health.
High summer holds the earth.
Hearts all whole.
Sure on this shining night
I weep for wonder wand'ring far
alone
Of shadows on the stars.

~James Agee

Haven't seen the stems turn colour while the blossom stays green~intriguing plant.

  1. A little poking around on Google says that's pokeweed - a stupid plant to have around kids since the berries look good, but it's poisonous. The sunflowers are gorgeous, though.

  2. Weed out the weak?

This is a busy biking/hiking path, so not much opportunity for children to wander unsupervised.
