“Our roots are in the dark; the earth is our country. Why did we look up for blessing--instead of around, and down? What hope we have lies there....Not in the light that blinds, but in the dark that nourishes, where human beings grow human souls."
--Ursula K. Leguin, from Dancing at the Edge of the World, Grove Press, 1989.

Love the concept that what we need lies near at hand. Happy Winter!

  1. I think I have this book - leave it to our Ursula to provide a delightfully contrarian viewpoint to this time of year. It's a good solstice thought, though; the renewal doesn't come from the return of the light on one specific day but comes from the cycle of the seasons that are always in play, quietly, going on underneath, despite what madness rages on overhead.

  2. I think I read it at your house in July! Yes, renewal also comes from the rotting leaves releasing nutrients into the ground. Not as pretty an image as sun/moon/stars.
