This could be really easily done... because the cubes are a.) cheap pressed wood b.) sold at just about every Lowe's and Home Depot everywhere and c.) it's just about the math... yeah, that math the kids said they'd never use again after geometry.
Other than needing a useful person with a power drill, I like this project because it's squarely within the reach of the average person. I think I'd skip the smallest inner boxes, though, or else only put a couple, of a different color.

Yes! My first thought was "why all white?" You know as soon as I have my own living space, I am going to figure out how to create this.
